Most people complain that their memory is poor because they can hardly recall what they learned in class, they forget their password or pin and worst of all, names of new colleagues and acquaintances that they have meet. This is quite frustrating and most people are willing do everything to improve their mental acuity. Poor memory is brought about by lack of recollection.
Recollection only takes place when the memory retains any content that has been relayed to the brain. This content is recorded and assimilated into the memory, making it easier to recall it. Therefore, it is essential to use the following memory enhancement techniques that work quite well.
Exercise
Physical exercise not only prevents illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes that can eventually lead to memory loss, but also oxygenates the brain. This stimulates circulation of blood within the brain and helps in improving mental acuity. Physical activities also lead to healthy cell regeneration by stimulating the release of essential brain chemicals. Indulging in activities that demand heightened attention and focus, such as playing tennis enhances the memory.
Feeding the brain
The brain requires proper nutrition and hydration for it to remain healthy and perform its functions properly. Eating a balanced diet composed of vegetables and fruits, healthy fats and whole grains is an effective memory enhancement technique. Drinking adequate water helps the brain electrochemical system to function better. Research has also showed that consuming foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids promotes brain health. Such food include cold water fish, such as herring, tuna, trout, sardines, salmon, mackerel and halibut. People who do not like fish are advised to take fish oil supplements that are widely available in the market. Other foods that are rich in omega-3 include soybeans, walnuts, ground flaxseed, pumpkin seeds and flaxseed oil. Research has also ascertained that consuming foods rich in high saturated fats, such as ice cream, butter, whole milk, cheese and red meat impairs the memory
Sleeping well
Sleep plays an integral role in enhancing the memory. Sleep deprivation prevents the brain from operating optimally and minimizes the brain's problem solving capabilities, critical thinking capacity and creativity. Sleep helps the brain to relax, improving memory consolidation and recollection. People are advised to sleep for at least six to eight hours if they want the brain to work well.
Avoiding stress
Stress brings about many medical problems, such as high blood pressure, chronic pain and depression. Stress, if not treated early, not only damages the brain cells, but also destroys the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain that helps in retrieval of old memories and formation of new ones. Depression takes a heavy toll on the brain and that's why some of its symptoms include memory loss, poor concentration and comprehension.
Brain workout
The brain needs to be constantly stimulated so that it can continue developing and growing. Engaging in brain games helps in keeping the memory active and is also fun. Brain games that can be found freely online enhance concentration, attention and the memory. Memory is similar to the muscular strength, which improves upon use. Working out the brain regularly improves its ability of recalling and processing information.
